Haagse Klimaatweek

We will be screening both Snowpiercer and Honeyland, followed by in-depth conversations with special guests. Snowpiercer is a breathtaking action spectacle that dares to ask big questions about the impact of climate change on the Earth and our role in society. Is pop culture the right medium to raise these urgent questions, or does a film like this miss the mark? After the screening, we will explore these themes with Maarten Keulemans, science editor at De Volkskrant, and Gabriela (Gaby) Alberola, researcher at the University of Amsterdam whose work focuses, among other things, on climate change budget allocation in the Global South. The discussion will be moderated by Sophie Jansen (Filmhuis Den Haag).

Honeyland follows a Macedonian beekeeper living in isolation with her ailing mother in a remote mountain village, practicing sustainable beekeeping and living by the principle of “half for me, half for you.” Her peaceful existence is disrupted when a nomadic family settles nearby, and their unsustainable practices threaten the fragile balance between humans and nature. After the screening of this Oscar-nominated documentary, we will discuss its themes and creation with Samir Ljuma, cinematographer of the film, and Diana Francês, advisor at WWF Netherlands. The conversation will be moderated by Melinda van Streun (Humanity Hub).
